Error 0x80070002
Ok i have a computer (WinXP, SP3) which had the Hijack.windowsupdate
virus/malware on it. i cleaned it up however I when I try to install Windows
Update I get the error message 0x80070002. i have gone through the process
for that error message on MS webpage and I still get the error message.
When i go into services and try to start Automatic Updates and BITS i get
Could not start the Automatic Updates service on Local Computer.
Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified
and
Could not start the Background Intelligence Transfer Service service on
Local Computer.
Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified.
I have checked for both Automatic Updates and BITS
1) that the local system account is checked on the Logon Tab and made sure
that the "allow service to interact with desktop" is UNchecked.
2) Startup is set to Automatic on the General tab
3) i have tried to start both of them and still get system cannot find the
file specified.
4) renamed the Updates folder to Updates.old and tried to do the updates,
still same problem.
5) i have the windowsupdate.log file, i do not know if that will help but
here is a little snippit from the log file

Second, are you sure that the system is *totally* clean of malware ?
Open Internet Explorer and see if the system can be scanned here:
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm
If it can not or you have already scanned the system there, then malware
may *still be present*.
Download and *save* the free version of Malwarebytes anti-malware:
http://www.malwarebytes.org/
Click the ' Download free version ' button to initiate the download.
When the download completes close *all* open programs and browsers.
Install MBAM, allow it to obtain it is updated definitions, and then do a
Quick scan.
When it is done scanning click the Show results button.
IF anything is detected, make sure that everything is checked, and click
Remove Selected.
Please provide the results of the attempted OneCare Safety scan and, if
the system could *not* perform that, the results of the MBAM scan.
What, if anything, was detected ?
***IF*** nothing was detected, you can then run the System File Checker
to replace any missing system files BUT, if something *was detected*
then running sfc will just be an exercise in futility

First, I don' t know why you said "you would be much better served starting a
new thread rather than tagging on to one that started in June." I started a
new thread.
Second, I guess i forgot to mention that I did installed and ran
Malwarebytes, that it found and removed the Hijack.windowsupdate.
I will run the scan that you mentioned below from onecare.live.com on
Tuesday when I return back to work
Again Thank you for responding back and I will let you know what the outcome
is.

1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually:

NB: Run the FULL scan, not the QUICK scan! You may need to download the

You're mowst welcome, luv2bike2. Just checked the WU NG via a browser
and you are correct ... you started a new thread. Props to you.
FWIW, some folks still use an NNTP news client reader and apparently
your thread ended up merged into 2 others, one started in June, the next
one in August, although the Message IDs are totally different.
it is something MS should deal with but I have a strong suspicion that
they'd prefer that NNTP fade away into oblivion.
Now, back to the issue at hand ... if the OneCare Safety Scanner does
not detect anything, go here, download, and *save* MicrosoftFixit50202.msi
How do I reset Windows Update components?
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058
When the download completes close *all* open programs and browsers.
Now run MicrosoftFixit50202.msi with the system connected to the network
or internet connection. Choose the 'Default' mode first; if no joy, do
the Aggressive mode next.
Reboot after each run of the Fixit and see if the system can update.

The computer is on a network (but i turned it off for the weekend), I
unfortunately do not like the anti-virus package that was put into place at
my company, it is updated on the defintions and has not expired. In my own
opinion, it stinks and it is a name brand that many companies use.
Anyway, I will do as you suggested as well as MowGreens suggestion and hope
and pray that i do not have to format and install XP again.
can you please educate me--- what does NB stand for? I am not sure what
that means.
Thanks again.

First, you would be much better served starting a new thread rather than
tagging on to one that started in June.

I will run the scan that you mentioned below from onecare.live.com on
Tuesday when I return back to work
Again Thank you for responding back and I will let you know what the outcome
is.

NB: If you had no anti-virus application installed or the subscription had
expired *when the machine first got infected* and/or your subscription has
since expired and/or the machine's not been kept fully-patched at Windows
Update, do not waste your time with any of the below: Format & reinstall
Windows. A Repair Install will NOT help!
1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx
NB: Run the FULL scan, not the QUICK scan! You may need to download the
MSRT on a non-infected machine, then transfer MRT.EXE to the infected
machine and rename it to SCAN.EXE before running it.
2. [WinXP ONLY!! =>] Run the Windows Live Safety Center's 'Protection' scan
(only!) in Safe Mode with Networking, if need be:
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm
3. Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting requested logs
in an appropriate forum, not here.

PA Bear, Thanks for responding, I will be working on the computer next week.

That's pretty much normal behaviour for a news client; the assumption is that if
the thread subject is the same, it is probably the same thread even if there is
no References header ... this helps when other folk are using noncompliant news
clients that do not add References. it is not quite so helpful, however, in
newsgroups like this one where subject lines naturally repeat themselves!

The problem has been resolved. I used all of your suggestions and the
aumha.net forum helped out as well.
I can now perform the MS Updates on that computer.
Thanks again
