I have Windows XP Pro SP2 installed without Windows Media Player,

version designation 'N' I believe. I have installed the K-Lite

standard codec pack that includes the latest version of Media Player

Classic (which I like). I also installed the RealAltLite codec pack to

view Realmedia files. MPC won't play wmv files. I installed VLC player

and it will, but I believe that all the codecs it uses are

included/intregal with that program. I have tried to install a

Microsoft codec pack for version 11, version 9 and version 7. . .no

joy! I tried installing the WMP itself (all above versions) and still

no joy! I tried to install the basic version 6.4 and, yup, you guessed

it, no joy. MPC will play every thing I throw at it except the wmv

family of files. For them I have to use VLC. A pain the butt.

I also removed all codecs and then installed "XP codec pack" from

here: http://www.xpcodecpack.com/ and the joy is still absent.

Would installing the K-Lite Mega pack fix this? God, my hair is

starting to hurt!

How do I get MPC to pay wmv files?? Without reinstalling my whole OS,

of course? Thanks.

Actually one cannot uninstall WMP software, you can disable WMP thru

add-remove windows components,but xp still uses it..Also,WMP 9 is

already installed,+ microsoft doesnt offer WMP 9 series for xp,so i dought

if you installed a correct version....

I'd be using GSpot, to check those files first.

Maybe they're not what you think they are. It

could be, someone put ".wmv" as a file extension,

as a joke.

seabat,

I have WMP v9.00.00.4507 installed on WXP (specifically it was installed

from the file: MPSetupXP.exe) ..and it plays all wmv files

As well I have Both MPC HC (HomeCinema) and the G (Gabest) version, and

both of these play any wmv files as well.

I also use VLC and of course that plays them too.

It's been so long ago since I did it, but I believe it's one or both these

codec packages from Miscrosoft that does it, so install them both.

Now on this current MS webpage I see it does not show it listed for XP

anymore:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/forpros/format/codecdownload.aspx

...But, the MHT of that same webpage I saved from back in 2004 from it

has the link in it, and so just copying from that .mht - here it is, and I

see the link is still still active:

This package is for network administrators who want to deliver support for

the latest Windows Media Audio and Video codecs for enterprise computers

running Windows Media Player 7.1, Windows Media Player for Microsoft

Windows XP, Windows Media Player 9 Series, and Windows Media Player 10.

Previous codec versions have been included to decode any data you may

encounter that has been encoded with those older versions. This package

contains the following codecs:

Windows Media Audio 9

Windows Media Audio 9 Voice

Windows Media Video 7, 8, and 9

Windows Media Video 9 Screen

Microsoft MPEG-4 versions 1, 2, and 3

ISO MPEG-4 versions 1 and 1.1

For WXP

http://download.microsoft.com/download/a/0/3/a0398036-25b9-410c-b371-c59957c1b0f4/WM9Codecs.exe

Note: If you do not have Windows Media Player 9 Series or later installed

and cannot play content by using the Windows Media Video 9 or Windows Media

Audio 9 Voice codecs from a Player embedded in a Web page, consider

downloading the codec installation package for Windows Media Player 6.4 as

well.

Also importantly I installed this other important codec from this MS

webpage too:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...familyid=0c99c648-5800-4aa3-a2fe-3de948689db8

Just a follow up. I finally got it working. I could not install any of

the retro packs or players except for WMP11 codecs. It sucked that one

up like a sponge and everything seems to be fine now. Thanks for all

the suggestions. There is joy in SW Texas today!
