My laptop has a recently installed Win XP OS. I use an ADSL connection

requiring id and password. I get connected and for a few minutes it is

okay then the connection freezes invariably. It won't last more than

three or four minutes. The connection just freezes and the system

doesn't even display the disconnection. I can reconnect after a number

of efforts but the browser wouldn't recognize the connection and no

data transfer takes place then. What could be the problem? My

connection works fine on the laptop and it is evidently no problem

with the ISP.

Thanks for any helpful suggestion.

It sounds like you're terminating PPPOE protocol on the laptop.

I can give an example of how I do it.

ADSL_modem ---------- router ------------- desktop computer

(bridged mode, terminates thinks it is on a LAN,

output=PPPOE) PPPOE uses DHCP to get IP address

Since my router box terminates the PPPOE protocol, the

"desktop computer" doesn't even know I'm using ADSL. There

is no ADSL software on my desktop computer, and that improves

its stability.

With my setup, the router has the userid and password, and

when I click the "connect" button on the router web interface,

the router sends the userid and password, as part of the PPPOE

connection setup.

If the ADSL modem is a rental from the ISP, it might be

"locked down" and lack reconfiguration features. If your ISP

allows you to buy your own modem, then it may be possible to

change the operating mode. But to understand what options

are available, we'd need to know the make and model number.

The web site "dslreports.com" has a forum, and there is much

helpful information there. I used that site to get information

to help me with the setup to my latest ISP.

you might consider

having your password

reset by your isp.

then enter into the modem's

setup page and ensure

that the ppoe has your

user id and new password

entered.

then try your browsing

again.
