Ran Defrag and had two 'Fragments' reported (last two lines of the log

print). One was for 6156 Fragments and one was for 7030 Fragments; the first

file is 1.51 GB and the second is 2.00 GB, and both are 'buried' deep in

\Documents and Settings\Bill & Peggy\Local Settings\Application

Data\Identities\25C08628.........\Microsoft\Outlook Express\ and both files

are .dbx files. Question: These files are apparently taking up 3.5 GB of HD

Space; can I delete them? I do not use Outlook Express although I have in the

past, but now am using exclusively MSN for both my Email Handling and access

to the Internet. The names of the files are; Tolleson Steel.dbx (an

accounting client) and Deleted Items.dbx. Thanks for any enlightenment. . .

One is an old personal inbox for Tolleson Steel and other is deleted items

folder

If you do not use OE no more and do not need to save any of it then you

can delete them

Using Opera's revolutionary e-mail client: http://www.opera.com/mail/

You should open Outlook Express in Offline State and then from the TOOLS

menu, Go to Options, Maintenance, Clean Up Now. This should get rid off all

the messages you have stored there. Also, make sure you have compacted the

folders before leaving.

This should get rid off 3.5 GB of messages.

If you no longer use Outlook Express and do not want to save any of the

emails you already have in it, start Outlook Express and delete all the

messages you have stored there.

If you want to save some of them, delete those you do not want, and if

you have empty folders THAT YOU CREATED in OE, you can delete them. Do

NOT try to delete Inbox, Outbox, Sent, Drafts, or Deleted folders.

If you delete folders from within Outlook Express, you will have to open

the Deleted folder to delete them from there also. Then while in the

Deleted folder, click Edit> Select All, then press the delete key and

confirm the deletion.

Once you have deleted everything you no longer want, do this....this is

the most important part:

Click File> Work Offline, to put a checkmark in that item so it is

offline.

In the Folder List, click the uppermost item (above Inbox and above

Local Folders) named Outlook Express.

Click File menu> Folders> Compact All Folders.

This will take a little while.

When it is done, you may click File> Work Offline, to remove the

checkmark, then close Outlook Express.

The compacting will reduce the size of those .dbx folder you see...just

deleting messages and folders in OE does not make the .dbx files smaller

until OE has compacted them.

Do NOT directly delete any of the .dbx folders or anything else in that

folder via Windows Explorer.

Now empty the Recycle Bin (compacting has filled it with "backups"), and

Defrag again.

General OE Caveats:

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local

folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Frequently (e.g., at least once-a-week) perform a manual compact of all OE

folders while "working offline". More at

http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm

- Do not cancel Automatic Compacting, should it occur, and do not attempt to

close OE via Task Manager or shutdown your machine if Automatic Compacting

is taking place.

- Disable email scanning by your anti-virus application. It can cause

corruption (i.e., loss of messages) and provides no additional protection:
