Is there a way finding out the product key within XP? I have a Laptop I

want to reinstall on and will need to activate it.

Thank you for your help and God Bless,

If the computer the Office software is installed onto still runs (and the

product is not Office 2000) you can download keyfinder from

http://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder/ Run it and it should give you

your Office activation key.

I meant the WindowsXP Product Key. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

This depends on whether your Windows was installed by an OEM or did

you install it yourself in the first place. If the windows was

installed by your OEM then it is unlikely you can get the key from

the machine because the key they use is special OEM key and is

useless for customers. The only key in such circumstances is the

one at the back of your desktop or laptop.

However, if you installed the Windows or your friend did it for you

then these productkey tool will help you:

32 bit systems

64 bit systems:

You just need to unzip them and run with your Windows Wxplorer.

There is no need to install anything.

The Product Key for your laptop should be on a sticker on the bottom of the

laptop.

A google search for product key finder would provide you numerous

options.

You may find it helpful to use the Belarc Advisor tool. This displays a

number of keys, including WIndows and Office keys, and also provides

information about installed hardware that can be very helpful if you realize

that you don't actually have the drivers, and can't identify the "unknown

device" listed in Device Manager.

Look on the bottom of the laptop for the certificate.

What is the make and model of the laptop?

Which version of XP is currently installed -- Home or Pro?

Did this laptop originally come with XP? Or was it installed after the

fact (perhaps as an upgrade)?

If you turn your laptop upside down, do you see a Certificate of

Authenticity sticker on it? If so, which version of Windows (XP Home or

XP Pro or something else) is listed?

Do you have the correct Windows XP installation CD (there are many!)?

(Or perhaps you have a Recovery or Restore CD, which is not the same

thing...) Also keep in mind that many laptops come with a hidden

easy-to-use (assuming the hard drive is still healthy!) recovery

partition. That is why I asked you to identify the make and model (and

model number) of this laptop.

Misunderstanding on my part, I forgot what newsgroup I was responding to.

Answer still the same unless, as has been pointed out that, if this is a

major manufacturer's install of XP the key that keyfinder will find won't

work for a reinstall as it is a cloned drive key. The actual key you would

need is on the bottom of the laptop in that case.
