I've received a docx file (Word 2007-type). My Word is 2000, so I can't

open it. So I've downloaded a MS converter but when I try to install it,

although it says 'satisfactorily installed' it's nowhere to be found so

that I can actually use it. I would expect it to be listed in All

Programs and/or to have its own desktop icon. Anyone any answers for me?

You may say this should be queried on a Word NG, but I thought it more

appropriate to ask on a Windows NG.

Have you tried to open the file in Word 2000 after installing the

converter?

It does seem as though I ought to be able to see the program in

Add/Remove Programs or All Programs, but it's not listed. And I've tried

opening in Word but it's gobbledegook and I don't see any add-on button

to change things.

I've come to the conclusion that what I need to know is why it's not

installed (or at least visibly) when the installer says it's done it.

1. You're correct that the converter should be listed in Add/Remove

Programs (but not Start > All Programs). Microsoft (as always) does not

make things simple: the converter is not listed under "Microsoft" or

"Word" or "Converter" or even "Office." Look for "Compatibility Pack for

the 2007 Office System."

2. If you see the Compatibility Pack in Add/Remove Programs, you can try

uninstalling it, redownloading it, and reinstalling it. Get it here:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...70-3AE9-4AEE-8F43-C6BB74CD1466&displaylang=en

3. Note that if you're using Word 2000, you should *first* install

service pack 3 (for Word 2000, not XP service pack 3, although you

should have installed the latter plus all high/priority updates for XP

anyway).

4. If you don't see the Compatibility Pack in Add/Remove Programs, or

if you have further difficulties, you should post in the general Word
