File Explorer says the folder is empty. Delete counts hundreds/thousands of files.

I'm trying to clean up a folder with many subfolders that have accumulated over time. File Explorer showed one subfolder to contain about six files. I disposed of each one by deleting it or moving it to another folder. Then I moved up one level and tried to delete the subfolder.Windows opened a progress box which said that it was "finding" objects to delete. I watched, baffled, as the count rose to several hundred. When I clicked Cancel, it was still "finding" more things to delete.I checked File Explorer's viewing options. "Show hidden files" was enabled. "Hide system files" was enabled, but
