If you are running a DirectX 9 application and then Open file explorer with the preview pane open and select a reasonably large text file, the preview panel overruns and causes the Application to lose its Device context.
Most applications will recover and recreate the DirectX context (silently). But this still suggests that the preview pane code is overwriting memory in a spate context.
This is present in both Windows 8 and Windows 10 but not Windows 7
