We have two patches that are failing on 30+ computers.

KB4580345

KB4580387

Error code: 0x80070005

From what little we’ve gathered, 0x80070005 is often listed as a permission error, but to what varies, (dll, reg key, etc) We haven’t been able to get much more than that.

Two of the affected computers are on our IT service desk team.

We are running Windows 7 w/ extended support until the end of the year and unfortunately we are not moving to Windows 10 until Q1 of next year so upgrading at this time is not an option or solution.

As mentioned we are running Windows 7 Pro SP1, x64, 250GB disk space available out of 500GB. I read somewhere that disk space can be an issue.

The patches report as successful in WSUS and Windows Update History Viewer tool. That is until the computer reboots, gets as far as 15% before reverting changes. Rinse and repeat.

All computers have the Windows 7 ESU patches.

2020-10 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB4580345)

So far, we have done the following; (where possible, the steps were replicated in safe mode)

· rebooted and attempted patching again.

· Removed failed patch through Programs and Features.

· Ran AV and malware scans.

· Disabled AV, tried re-installing.

· Downloaded and manually installed the two .msu files.

· Confirmed ESU licensing and re-installed ESU’s on one computer.

· Completed the windows update components checklist (disable services, renamed softwaredistribution and catroot2 folders, etc)

· Deleted the qmgr*.dat files.

· Ran WU (bypassing WSUS server)

· Ran .net repair tool (one station reported an additional error: 0x80070643 error on visual studio 2008)

· SFC /scannow

· Have gone through the log files, nothing stands out.

· Attempted installing patches manually and through WSUS, tried one patch at a time, followed by a reboot. Both fail and revert back.

· Windows update clients are all up to date

· Ran the built-in troubleshooting and repair tools as well as the other Microsoft fix-it tools and the Windows update troubleshooter.

· Exhaustive online searches for solutions pertaining to Windows 7 is getting harder and harder to find.

· System restore doesn’t work.

Each one of these steps provided a positive result. It was either successfully removed, repaired or installed successfully. Until the reboot.

These steps were not performed all at the same time.

The scary part is we have about 250 computers that are still pending reboot and we don’t know where they are going to land when they do.

Any ideas?

We might end up having to roll back these computers, decline the update for them and pray that November rollup fixes it.

Let me know if there is anything else you need.

Here are some snippets from the log files of the two IT staff computers.
