Failed install of Visual C++

I have recently purchased a new pc and when checking if any updates required msg came up advising that update required for Visual C++ Redistibutabl. I tried updating but update failed. Post here suggested that I uninstall C++ and then reinstall latest version but when i tried to reinstall C++ it failed with msg that another update was in progress - presumably the failed update mentioned earlier. Any help greatly appreciated .
