External Mail Contacts Hidden from GAL Display in Outlook/OWA/EAS

Good day,

We're using Mail Contacts to allow us to add external email addresses to internal distribution groups. We also correspond with these folks regularly using their external email addresses. What I'm seeing that that Exchange seems to translate the external email address to the mail contact, and clients (Outlook, OWA and EAS are confirmed) will display the display name for the mail contact rather than the external email address, even though the mail contact is hidden from address lists.

To illustrate, we have the external email address, test@gmail.com. I've created a mail contact with the display name test_ext, and assigned the test@gmail.com address as it's primary address. The secondary address is test_ext@domain.com. When I send and email directly to test@gmail.com, client devices display the display name associated with test_ext@gmail.com. This is occurring even though we have the mail contacts hidden from the GAL.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this? It seems unintuitive, but at the same time I could believe it's functioning as intended. If it's intentional, is anyone aware of any work arounds besides correcting the display name? Ideally, we would just have it display their external email address as any other one, and ignore the mail contact completely unless running through our distribution list.

Thanks, and enjoy your day!
