Extended screen display not working on a classroom smartboard

I am a teacher and I often use duplicated screen for my smartboard and my laptop. However, I would really prefer to use extended screen. My extended screen will turn on, but on the board it will just show my desktop background- if I try to actually open any tabs it refuses to click them. They will even show the preview when I hover over them and I can search things in the desktop search bar, but I cannot actually open anything. It is the same with wireless screenshare or with an HDMI cable.
