Existing Files Do Not Recognize New Default Open App

I have a folder with 150 video files. Previously I set the default app for these files as the VLC media players. Now I want to change the default app to iTunes.I can successfully change the default app for the PC from the VLC Player to iTunes using the System Settings/Apps/Default Apps options. But nothing changes on the video files in the folder: if I click on one to open it, it still opens in the VLC Player.If I try to change the "Open With" setting on an individual file, iTunes is not listed as a choice.
