Excel hack

I’m a graphic designer part time and have been working with clients on their brand and since all their files are on my laptop they asked me to fill in a tech pack via excel spreadsheet once I opened the sheet and starting putting in the images as soon as I clicked save a error message popped up which was something I’ve never experienced before from an excel sheet that is when i suspected that my client shared a corrupted file which allowed him access to my pc and able to retrieve all my work and copy it on his side…can something like this happen?
