Are you supposed to get this error WHENEVER you start in safe mode?

Thank you

No.

You're welcome.

Well, I do. What does that mean?

I assumed that it was normal as, indeed, in safe mode many drivers are not

loaded. What 7026 says, apparently, is that those drivers are missing.

Any ideas?

Thank you

JB

More information is necessary to help understand and resolve your

issue.

We need some system information and the actual contents of the Event

Log message.

Click Start, Run and in the box enter:

msinfo32

Click OK, and when the System Summary info appears, click Edit, Select

All, Copy and then paste

back here.

There will be some personal information (like System Name and User

Name), and whatever appears to

be private information to you, just delete from the pasted

information.

Here is a method to post the specific information about individual

events.

To see the Event Viewer logs, click Start, Settings, Control Panel,

Administrative Tools, Event Viewer.

A shortcut to Event Viewer is to click Start, Run and in the box

enter:

%SystemRoot%\system32\eventvwr.msc /s

Click OK to launch the Event Viewer.

The most interesting logs are usually the Application and System.

Some logs may be almost or completely empty.

Not every event is a problem, some are informational messages that

things are working okay and some are warnings.

No event should defy reasonable explanation.

Each event is sorted by Date and Time. Errors will have red Xs,

Warnings will have yellow !s.

Information messages have white is. Not every Error or Warning event

means there is a serious issue.

Some are excusable at startup time when Windows is booting. Try to

find just the events at the date

and time around your problem.

If you double click an event, it will open a Properties windows with

more information. On the right are

black up and down arrow buttons to scroll through the open events. The

third button that looks like

two pages on top of each other is used to copy the event details to

your Windows clipboard.

When you find an interesting event that occurred around the time of

your issue, click the third button

under the up and down arrows to copy the details and then you can

paste the details (right click, Paste

or CTRL-V) the detail text back here for analysis.

To get a fresh start on any Event Viewer log, you can choose to clear

the log (backing up the log is offered),

then reproduce your issue, then look at just the events around the

time of your issue.

Thank you, so much, Jose

That is perfect.

I am not finished looking yet but it looks familiar (I don't see any

of that on my home grown system).

How are you getting into Safe Mode?

Are you invoking Safe Mode to troubleshoot a particular issue and what

is the issue?

While you are waiting, please do this too:

Download, install, update and do a full scan with these free malware

detection programs:

Malwarebytes (MBAM): http://malwarebytes.org/

SUPERAntiSpyware: (SAS): http://www.superantispyware.com/

They can be uninstalled later if desired.

Oh yeah - what do you have installed now for antivirus, malware

detection, etc. Norton, McAfee, Spybot, ZoneAlarm, AVG, Microsoft

stuff, etc.

Hi Jose

I use Avast (free) anti-virus, Comodo (free) Firewall an updated Hosts file

and up-to-date SpywareBlaster.

I scan regularly, including MalwareBytes.

Sometimes I prefer to scan in SafeMode if I feel there might be something

lurking. Whenever I do I get the errors that you saw in EventViewer.

Thanks, again

Forgot to add that I go into SafeMode by pressing F8 during reboot.

It probably means you've got a hijackware infection on your hands.

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your

subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?

What third-party firewall (if any)?

Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the

computer (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought

it)?

Is Automatic Updates enabled & is the computer fully-patched at Windows

Update?

Is Task Manager and/or Regedit functional?

Hi

As I wrote in an earlier post, I have Avast, Comodo and SpywareBlaster. Yes

I had McAfee (paid for) in the past, but I gave it up long ago. Automatic

Updates are enabled and I scan very, very often with SpyBot, MalwareBytes

and Online scanners. The system is, according to all these progs, clean.

I am not sure what you mean by: 'Is Task Manager and/or Regedit functional'.

I access regedit often without trouble. task manager I never use directly.

Thanks for your interest

work, but there was a notice warning that it might not because I did not use

a password.

I can't remember. That was maybe over 3 years ago. Do you think the errors

starting in safe mode may be related? If so, what should I do?

Back-up any personal data (none of which should be considered 100%

trustworthy at this point) then format the HDD & do a clean install of

Windows. Please note that a Repair Install (AKA in-place upgrade) will NOT

fix this!

HOW TO do a clean install of WinXP: See

http://michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html#steps and/or Method 1 in

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/978307

After the clean install, you'll have the equivalent of a "new computer" so

take care of everything on the following page before otherwise connecting

the machine to the internet or a local network (i.e., other computers) and

before using a flash drive or SDCard that isn't brand-new or hasn't been

freshly formatted:

NB: Any Norton or McAfee free-trial that came preinstalled on the computer

when you bought it will be reinstalled (but invalid) when Windows is

appropriate removal tool before installing any updates, Windows Service

Packs or IE upgrades and before installing your new anti-virus application

(which will require WinXP SP3 to be installed).

First, could you tell me why you mentioned McAfee? And what is the

connection to errors in safe boot?

Thanks

A1. I've referenced McAfee at least twice in this thread. Which one are you

referring to?

A2. Since you can't tell me if the McAfee subscription had expired before

you replaced it with Avast, I must assume that it had and that your System

Restore problem is being caused by a hijackware infection which may have

been around since the McAfee subscription expired.

Hi

McAfee subscription had not expired before I replaced it with Avast. My

System Restore is totally deleted regularly.

But I don't understand what you mean by my System Restore problem. I was

not aware that I had one. My problem, if it is a problem, has to do with

errors in Event Viewer when I start in Safe Mode (only when I start in safe

Mode).

Personally, I thought they were normal as it appears, to me, that it has to

do with internet connection which in safe mode is not available.

If you have any information on that it would be helpful.

Look what I found on my system:

Event Type: Error

Event Source: Service Control Manager

Event Category: None

Event ID: 7026

Date: 3/3/2010

Time: 7:42:30 AM

Description:

The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:

AFD

Fips

IPSec

MRxSmb

NetBIOS

NetBT

Processor

RasAcd

Rdbss

SASDIFSV

SASKUTIL

Tcpip

For more information, see Help and Support Center at

http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

Looks similar and this happens only when I boot in Safe Mode without

networking. If I boot Safe mode with networking, I do not have this

informative message.

I interpret it to mean the drivers are failing to load because they

are not supposed to load unless you boot Safe mode with networking.

So I think this is normal for the boot option selected.

I have the exact same ones you have, you just have a couple more.

Your environment is not the same as mine of course - you have some

things I don't have, but you have more things installed than I do (it

sounds like).

If I boot in Safe Mode I tend to use Networking and have never looked

at the Event Log for the different boot options until now.

The OP says he was booting in Safe Mode - not Safe Mode with

Networking.

Do you see the same things when you boot in Safe Mode with networking

or do you only see it in just plain Safe Mode?

> My System Restore is totally deleted regularly.

Are you intentionally deleting/removing Restore Points or is this happening

on its own? If the former, why are you doing so? If the latter, no, it is

NOT normal and you may be seeing the effects of a hijackware infection.
