Hello, i'm currently running off a Dell Inspiron 6400 Laptop.. Im currently
using Windows Vista Home Premium. The system has been automatcially trying
to update the software, but comes up with the error code 643. I have tried
to do it manually also, but i receive the same thing. Also when i do
restart/boot up the laptop, an error does come up with a "Install update
error".. I've been skipping the update(s) that have gone on so far, but i
dont want to miss anything that may be important. I'm not technically
savvy, so any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Same Laptop, Same Problem

Any advice is appreciated

Thanks,

John here, customer advocate at Dell headquarters.

The error you list is a generic error WindowsUpdate gives which
basically means "the update wasn't installed successfully". In order to
tell you why the updates aren't installing I would need to know which
updates are giving you this error, and then I -may- be able to tell
you.

Without specifics, the first thing I would try is installing the
updates manually after clean booting the system. To do so, follow the
steps as outlined in Method 2 in the following Microsoft KB article:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353

(note: some DSL service providers use software to authenticate and
connect to the network. If this is the case with your ISP, then once
you've cleared the "Load startup items" box in msconfig, you'll have to
go to the startup tab and re-check your ISP's software in order to get
an internet connection after reboot)

Let me know if this helps, and if not, please post the specific updates
that are giving you this problem.
