Driver Power State Failure blue screen help

Every time I run my laptop without an external monitor plugged in, so only using the built-in display, the laptop would lock up and then eventually blue screen with a DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE. This also happens if I try to restart or shut down the laptop without an external monitor connected or put the device to sleep.
