DNS Resolution problem

Hello,



I have a problem with DNS resolution with an XP SP2 Pro , I can't

connect to a web site with its address, ie www.google.com, but if I put

the IP address in the IE address bar I can connect to the web site.

I tried with ping command and it's the same, it just works with IP

address though nslookup works.



I installed MS Network Monitor to see what happens when I do a ping to

www.google.com, there are just five trames as you can see here :

I did :

netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt

and

netsh winsock reset

I restarted the computer but it didn't change anything.



I looked at this page http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314053

my system sounds ok with theses parameters.



If I modify the host file (c:\windows\system32\driver\etc\host) and I

insert an entry for www.google.com for exemple, i can ping

www.google.com



I also checked my system with antivirus and antiwmalware, I did this by

putting the hard disk in another computer out of box



I also installed TCP/IP again on the network adaptator but any change.



I would appreciate any help

You said nothing about your DNS configuration and nothing about your

internet access configuration.



Do you use a router ? Then you should get your DNS server addresses from it.

Otherwise you should set your DNS server addresses manually.

Look at your TCP/IP properties:

My DNS configuration is ok. I'm using a router to access to Internet

which has a dhcp server that puts DNS ISP adresses to my PC. I tried to

enter manually my DNS addresses but it changes nothing.

As you can see on the snapshot that I took, there is no DNS requests

when I do a ping www.google.com
 
Areas to check:



Stop the 'DNS Client' service. This purely serves to cache DNS requests, and

is not essential. If it goes haywire it can cause name-resolution trouble. If

stopping it solves your problems, then disable it.



-Other software might have inserted a 'shim' into the IP stack. Apple's

Bonjour springs to mind, as does Google Desktop Search. If so, LSPFix may

reveal its presence.

-If you are using a router as your DNS source, it may have a broken DNS

implementation. Older D-link models suffer from this. Try setting the

computer to use the ISP's DNS servers directly. (Or, if you have a

Windows/Linux server onsite, try running your own DNS service on it, this is

often the best approach as it cuts-out the middleman completely)

Ok I stopped DNS client. I also did ipconfig /flushdns but nothing

change, i can't do a ping www.google.com.

Ok I tried it, it said No Problems found

In the Keep box, there are :

mswsock.dll

winrnr.dll

rsvpsp.dll



I also tried WinSock XP Fix but nothing change.



There are no Bonjour or Google Desktop Search or other software like

that in the computer but a 'shim' can have been inserted into the IP

stack since Kapersky Internet Security was on this computer. I

uninstalled it from the configuration panel and with the Kaspersky's

uninstaller. Currently, there are no Antivirus, no Firewall even the

one of windows since I desactivated it and no antispyware.

I scanned the registry and it seems that there is no entry of Kaspersky

in it.

I don't have a DNS server on my network, I'm using the ISP's DNS

server. I also tried the public Google DNS addresses which didn't solve

my problem.

As we can see on the capture, there are no DNS frames when I do a ping

www.google.com, there are just 3 nbtns frames so it's sure that the

computer can't get reply from a DNS server.

As there are just nbtns frames i thought that it could come from a

wrong name resolution order so I looked at the key :



HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\ServiceProvider



but values are correct.



The problem just comes with this computer, if i try another computer on

the network, there is no problem.

Sounds like you've done all the right things, or close to it. I assume it's

ALL web sites and not just a select few you can't reach using the text

address?

The distinction is important because if some work and some don't, that's

just about a sure sign of malware at work, or maybe part of a DOS attack

you've been covertly brought into.



A few days ago, Verizon had an outage for several hours that interrupted

e-mail and internet services here in the northeast. Maybe DNS isn't working

correctly?

Try accessing the same sites from another computer but with one of your

own accounts at Verizon and see if it fails, too. Well ... Verizon or Yahoo

or MSN, whatever they've set up for your mail routes.



Quite a few different directions things could go here.

Yes, you are right, it's all web sites. I just gave an example when I

used www.google.com

I don't think the problem is related to DNS server since none DNS frame

goes out of my computer

With other computers, I don't have any problem to get on Internet with

www.... address. The network is working properly.

Look under the Connections tab of Internet Options. Have you configured

any proxy servers?

no, none proxy server is configured



I tend to believe that the TCP/IP stack is broken and netsh int ip

reset ... doesn't fix it but why ? and how to repair this stack ?



I also tried to desactivate NetBios with TCP/IP. In this case, there is

no more frames in MS Network Monitor when I did ping to a wab address

(ie www.google.com for example). However nslookup correctly works.

Does the behavior persist when you use other browsers (like Opera or

Firefox)?



Do you use a router? If so, how is it configured? And how are your

TCP/IP Properties configured? Did you enter actual IP addresses for your

DNS servers? Or did you enter other values (per your router)?
