DISM and Windows Update fail to start

More failures. Now, Windows Update fails to complete its check (with a random error message that appears after a very long time) and DISM is simply stuck in this condition forever (never fails, simply stuck). I tried many solutions (including killing the update service) but nothing works (it is STILL looking for updates even without the service). I am not assuming a harddrive malfunction because the drives are only 2 years old, but considering everything (recently I had an error that required a new windows install image to correct) I don't know what to think.
