Disk corruption by "copy", possibly provoked by File History; circumvention (not proven)

I have stumbled across a problem that can corrupt a disk. CHKDSK confirms the corruption, but often there is other disturbing evidence like folders disappearing or folders morphing into ordinary files (thereby making inaccessible all files and folders underneath). The operation that fails is a copy of a folder (e.g., UserX), with a tree of folders underneath it and files in most of the folders, to a different disk (but both NTFS, 4TB, same manufacturer—WD). CHKDSK shows no corruption of the input disk (before or after the copy). About 5,000 files are copied, and 10-15 mi
