I'm sticking with XP/SP2 for now.......but often get an update icon (set to
notify) that disappears before I can get to it....or starts a download and
then disappears! What's up here?

Which setting is Automatic Updates set to ?

You can see what's going on viz a viz the AU icon by checking the
WindowsUpdate.log located in the WINDOWS directory [folder].

How to read the Windowsupdate.log file

Open C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log <=this file

Scroll to the bottom, then up: Any errors or perhaps lines reading "Update
is not allowed to download due to regulation"?

Repeat: *Did* you or did you not approve an update for downloading (not
installing) the last time the Automatic Updates prompt appeared?

Is WindowsUpdate.log filled with "Update is not allowed to download due to
regulation" errors?
