Disappearing Folders and Files

Hello. Yesterday, I created a new folder (let's call it B for a name) within an existing folder (named A). I then saved some files in the new folder B. Today, the B folder has vanished along with the files I had placed in it. Then, I also noticed other files that had been in folder A are missing too. How can this happen? What other folders and/or files may be missing? I design unique garment designs and have literally thousands of design files so it's difficult to determine what others may be missing too. I'm freaking out a bit. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!!
