Deleted files keep reappearing, please make it stop!

I've been trying to clear up space on my computer, so I deleted a lot of pictures that I had in a folder on my desktop. I even deleted them from my recycle bin. A few weeks later they showed back up (like I had never deleted them. I did the process all over again and a few weeks later they reappeared, again. I googled this and it said to unsych my desktop from one drive, but the box to uncheck desktop is grayed out, so I can't unsych it. Please help, I just want these files gone.
