Data recovery on an external hard drive lost from a crash

My computer crashed with my external hard drive connected. I ran the command prompt chkdsk /r and now I have an unsuspected error 696e647863686b2e 8cf. What's next to recover my data? The drive shows as there, just unaccessible, but doesn't show to eject. Thanks!
