Computer Sleep issues

Whenever I close the lid to my laptop the display turns off but the computer is still running (can hear fan and light indicator on power button remains on) but I can't turn it back on and have to fully turn it off and on again using the power button. I can still go to sleep mode from the start menu and reformatting my computer will temporarily fix the issue, but the problem returns eventually.
