Windows Vista on my new computer downloads updates every day but every day it
fails to install them, giving me the error code 8007007B
If downloads won't work on a new computer, what chance is there when it gets
old?
Help!

How to rename the SoftwareDistribution folder in Vista -
1. Stop the Windows Update service (make sure you are logged on as an Administrator)

Start button || Control Panel ||System and Maintenance ||Administrative Tools
Double-click Services
(Provide the Administrator password or confirmation if prompted to do so.)
Right-click the Windows Update service and click Stop.

2. Click Start, type %windir% in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.

Locate and rename the SoftwareDistribution folder.

3. Start the Windows Update service

Start button || Control Panel ||System and Maintenance ||Administrative Tools
Double-click Services
(Provide the Administrator password or confirmation if prompted to do so.)
Right-click the Windows Update service and click Start.

This procedure will erase your history on the Windows Update Site. Not important.

You can check which updates are installed on your computer by -

Start button || Control Panel || Programs
Under Programs and Features - click View installed updates.

Try WU again - some have to reboot first.

I followed these steps and did both without (first) and with (second time) a
restart. It didn't resolve the problem. I'm getting this error trying to
install the latest Windows Media Update #KB929399. Does anyone know how to
get past this error message other than the process stated below?

Thanks for your help.

Having just come off a two-week stint with Microsoft Customer Service via
e-mail with no satisfaction in resolving a different problem, I have a very
bad taste in my mouth regarding "pat" answers to questions. Had you actually
READ my post, you would see that the first thing I said was that I just tried
this suggestion...twice...and it didin't work. I was looking for a different
"pat" answer, I guess. Why is it you guys can't actually use your own brain
to provide responses...or is that what this is? If so, I may never get this
"important" update installed.

Please respond only if you really think you can help. Thank you.

Details?

<cmd_output>
F:\WINDOWS>set /a c = 0x7b
123
F:\WINDOWS>net helpmsg %c%

The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect.
</cmd_output>

If that's what the code means, there could be lots of things which
would cause it.

Codes by themselves are almost useless as diagnostics.
The context of the code in the other diagnostics logs is what
would help you understand your symptom better.

Good luck

I too am running into this problem and have followed the instructions to the
tee, but am still getting Windows cannot check for updates error and when I
do try to check for updates it wants to first install an update for Windows
update. After running the update for the update an error code comes up
saying Error(s) found:

Code 8007007B.

Click OK.
Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
Click Stop.
Stopping the service will take a moment.

Rename the "SoftwareDistribution" folder:
a. Click Start, click Run, type %systemroot%, and then click OK.
b. Right-click the SoftwareDistribution folder, and then click Rename.
c. Type SoftwareDistribution.old, and then press ENTER to rename this folder.

Click Start. Choose Run.

Click once after the last quotation mark "
Push the Space Bar on the keyboard and enter /wuforce
The entry should now look like this

"C:\<locationoffile>\WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe" /wuforce

Note the space after the last quotation mark and the /

Click OK or press Enter
Then download, save, close the browser, and install KB927891
