Clicking on the Start icon causes the desktop background to fade to almost white

I have an Asus laptop. Clicking on the Start icon causes the desktop background to fade to almost white. Clicking back on the Start icon and the menu just stays up. I can only right click. We I open up files the background fades again. Windows is up to date. Any ideas on how to fix would be appreciated.
