I hope this is the right place for my problem!!

I am using W XP on a desktop and want to copy some files to CDs..

I have 2 dvd/cd drives on the desktop.

If I do Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager > DVD/CD-

Rom Drives I get the following: HL-DT-ST DVD+RW GWA4164B and HL-DT-ST

DVD-ROM GDR8163B.

I have no idea what any of that means but am providing it in the hope

that it will mean something to someone.

When I go to Windows Explorer > My Computer they are listed as DVD

Drive D and DVD-RW Drive E.

If I put a new CD-RW or CD-R into Drive D and Select it I get a

message Please insert a disk into Drive D.

If I put a new CD-RW or CD-R into Drive E its name changes to CD Drive

E and I immediately get a message saying E:/ is not accesible.

Incorrect Function.

If I put an CD with music into either drive I get a screen saying

Audio CD and the drive letter. I then select Media Player and the

music plays.

I am stymied. It is quite possible I am doing something wrong or not

doing something I should but I have not a clue what that may be. Can

anyone help me?

Thanks for any and all help

First of all, the HL-DT-ST DVD-ROM GDR8163B is a DVD *player.* It will

not burn anything. It should play both CDs and DVDs. This is the unit

that shows as "DVD Drive D."

Second, HL-DT-ST DVD+RW GWA4164B appears to be installed in Dell

computers and seems to be the subject of many complaints similar to

yours. This is the unit that shows as "DVD-RW Drive E." It *should* both

play and burn CDs and DVDs, but for some people, it will burn DVDs but

not CDs while for others, it won't burn anything.

For example, I found this:

> The GWA-4164B is a problematic drive. Search this forum and you will see quite a lot of complaints about it. This model is a custom one for OEM customers and is usually only bundled by OEMs like Dell with their computers. It isn't usually sold as a bare drive on the market. It's not typical of the quality of LG drives in general. Unfortunately, it might be the only encounter with LG drives most Dell and other OEM computer owners ever encounter.

Call your computer manufacturer, and if you're still under warranty,

demand a replacement.

Otherwise:

1. Have you *ever* been able to burn CDs?

2. Can you/have you ever been able to burn DVDs?

3. What CD burning application(s) have you tried?

4. Since the last time you successfully burned a CD or DVD, have you

installed or uninstalled any application that is capable of burning CDs

or DVDs?

5. If you have a Dell, see the post by "blah" here (bearing in mind that

it's from 2007):

CD/DVD Drives can partially fail. I see it all the time where a burner

stops having the ability to burn but it can read fine. I have one in my

workstation.

Here is something to try:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060

A Google search seems to suggest both drives are LG. Go to the LG site

and look for driver and firmware updates for both drives.
