can't turn off windows defender periodic scanning

Hello, I turned on windows defender periodic scanning just to test it, but when I went back into settings to turn it off again, the settings options had changed and the toggle switch had disappeared, so it is no longer possible to switch it off. I've tried to follow the directions I see online by going to settings>update and security>windows defender, but for whatever reason, my settings doesn't have the "windows defender" directory. Instead where it should say "windows defender" in the sidebar, it reads "windows security," and when I click on this, there simply is no option to turn off periodic scans.
