Cant sign in to desktop after it has been in storage for months

My desktop has been in storage for months. I have, however, continued to use my laptop during this time, and have updated my sign-in details etc.Upon start-up of my desktop, I hit 'forgot password' and when prompted, I inserted the code sent to my backup email address; however, it takes me back to insert the pin on the original screen. When I log into my Microsoft account on my laptop, under 'devices', I can see my desktop there, it knows its location, although I don't know what else to do to log in.Any suggestions??
