I have windows vista 32 bit and can't search for new updates,

it keeps showing an error code.

I have already searched alot of solutions on this site with no luck.

The history of previous installed updates is gone, and it stated that the

last update was installed in april 2009.

I already tried renaming softwaredistribution but that changed nothing,

also installed KB967723 but said it isn't for my system.

System update readyness KB947821 didn't change anything either.

Tried sfc/scannow but said there was nothing wrong

don't have an windows dvd anymore to upgrade or re-install

this is really annoying, because my pc is slowing down alot.

Internet pages keep freezing and restarting and such and i think it's

because my updates aren't installed.

Any help?

A repair install is the usual solution of SFC /Scannow doesn't work.

You receive a "0x80070490" error code when you use Windows Update or

Microsoft Update Web sites to install updates

First off, this is the *XP* General newsgroup; since you are posting

this via a web browser, you can post this issue to the Windows Update

newsgroup or the Windows Update 'forum':

http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx?dg=microsoft.public.windowsupdate

http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vistawu/threads

Second, when the System Update Readiness Tool (CheckSUR) was run it

created a log at Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSur.log

Did you check that log yet ?

Third, what is the installed antivirus/security suite; is the

subscription still current; when was the system last scanned with it and

was anything detected ?

Fourth, the system *must* include a way for you to write a Vista

Recovery DVD or the manufacturer must include the Vista installation DVD

if was built by an OEM. If the DVD became damaged then the OEM will

replace it for a fee.

Who built the system ?

When you repost this issue to a more suitable location please include a

copy of the CheckSUR.log, the info about the installed security

software, and who built the system.

If you consider yourself an Advanced Windows User, see this blog post.

* Remember to back up any registry keys that you edit BEFOREHAND *:

Back-up any personal data (none of which should be considered 100%

trustworthy at this point) then format the HDD & do a clean install of

Windows. Please note that a Repair Install (AKA in-place upgrade) will NOT

fix this!

HOW TO do a clean install of Vista: See the "If you want to reinstall

Windows Vista by performing a clean installation..." section of

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/Installing-and-reinstalling-Windows-Vista#section_3

After the clean install, you'll have the equivalent of a "new computer" so

take care of everything on the following page before otherwise connecting

the machine to the internet or a local network (i.e., other computers) and

before using a flash drive or SDCard that isn't brand-new or hasn't been

freshly formatted:

4 steps to help protect your new computer before you go online

http://www.microsoft.com/security/pypc.aspx

NB: Any Norton or McAfee free-trial that came preinstalled on the computer

when you bought it will be reinstalled (but invalid) when Windows is

reinstalled. You MUST uninstall the free-trial and download/run the

appropriate removal tool before installing any updates, Windows Service

Packs or IE upgrades and before installing your new anti-virus application.

Norton Removal Tool

ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/removal_tools/Norton_Removal_Tool.exe

McAfee Consumer Products Removal Tool

http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe

If these procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting

this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and

independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA or Geek Squad) computer repair shop.
