Can't access PST file with Outlook 2010

[drumz]

I had a harddrive fail so I got a new harddrive and Windows 7 Pro too because

the machine is OEM. I had just backed up Outlook so I had a fairly recent PST

file. But now, when I try to import it, I get an error saying I don't have

the rights to access the file? Huh, I created it!!! So I thought well maybe I

have to log in as Admin bit couldn't see how to do it.



THIS IS REALLY SERIOUS AS I NEED THAT FOR MY BUSINESS!!!



How do I get access to that file???

OEM is of no consequence

How did you backup outlook and to what?

Locate the pst in your Documents folder, ensure any read only flag is off.

Within Outlook open the data file.

Why not? I can still access online if I have a conplete failure, I just

prefer to use OL. I backed it up in Outlook. I tried to change the attributes

of the file from the command prompt but it says I don't have permission. OEM

is of consequence because I don't have disks for the OS and that's part of

the reason I bought

a new HD and W7.

I was an M$ product tester for 5 years and take precautions. So if you can't

I removed the read attribute from the file by going to the command line (Run

-> cmd [RETURN] now in the command window (DOS prompt) enter: attrib -r

filename.pst and press [RETURN]. Type exit to close the window.

I was then able to import the PST file and all is good.

You should also know, as a seasoned user that Import/Export is rarely the

way to handle native outlook data

Well, if it's really serious, you shouldn't be using beta software to access

it. You should never run beta software on a critical system.



You might also post this over to the beta forum for Office 2010, where lots

of the beta users are hanging out.
