Humm...
Let's see if I have this correct. You don't mind changing your Registry
Settings by first installing Windows Live Photo Gallery, and then
compounding that by changing the Registry Settings again by installing the
Real Player and setting it as the default Player.
But you do mind making a Registry change that might undo all the changes
you've already made.
It seems pretty obvious at this point that your default .asx file
association has been hosed, first by the installation of Window Live Photo
Gallery, and then again by your installation of the Real Player.
I only see two courses of action for to try and remedy this .asx file
association problem. You can first try resetting Windows Media Player back
as the default Player:
1. Go to "Default Programs", "Set program access and computer defaults".
2. Select "Windows Media Player" as the default - Do Not select, "use my
current media player"
If the above fails to rectify the .asx file association problem, then you're
left with trying the Registry fix offered at the MS site I directed you to
in my first reply in this thread:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/974538
Note: You should always back up your Registry before making any manual
changes.
Backing up the Registry in Windows Vista:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Back-up-the-registry
Since this is technically not an IE8 issue, but rather a Windows Media
Player issue, you might try posting about your issues in the Windows Media
Player newsgroup:
