Cannot get BitLocker recovery key!

My son has just updated his laptop at his school as it was struggling to get onto the school WIFI, once updated it then asked for a BitLocker recovery key which was never originally set up. I have tried to follow the recovery instructions but they are totally useless and don't help recovery.The laptop is brand new and only 1 week old as a replacement. Help!
