Candy Crush Soda Saga spinning blue wheel and long pauses

I've been playing Candy Crush Soda Saga for quite some time on my Windows 10 laptop with no problems, but recently I've started to get long pauses in the game. Every 20 seconds or so the game pauses, I get the blue spinning wheel, if I click the mouse it starts again but if I leave it alone it lasts for maybe 20 seconds before the game continues all by itself. It's very annoying. This coincided with the Microsoft app message 'you'll need a new app to open this' that now appears at the start of every game. It's as if some other program is running in the background, and either updating or downloading, causing CC to pause, but I can't work out what it is, and if I leave it - often for hours - nothing updates or loads. It's so irritating having to click on the game every 20 or 30 seconds to keep it running. Any ideas as to why?
