it's a brand new workstation / business laptop from hp
with the most current updates
trying to add this to our local area network w. server 2008 r2
all workstations are working fine. lan is fully functional
this new workstation can access the internet
it can ping the ip address of the server
however, file explorer will not open shared folders on the server; it will not get to the point where it asks for the user name or password, or even list the server as a network node
after trying to access the share, a cryptic time out error message appears saying "your computer appears to be correctly configured, but the device or resource (server) is not responding"
i've confirmed all the settings in network and sharing center, i've had hp support remote into this workstation, as well as microsoft support remote in. also, i've tried network resetting and other recommended fixes. i don't know what else to do. hp support is recommending re-imaging the workstation, however, i am not too optimistic about this plan, but this is the only other alternative. i don't know what else to try. it's completely bizarre. how does anything like this happen
