Can I reuse a old windows key that I bought for a new pc?

I have recently change the motherboard of my pc, and as a result of that I have had to reinstall windows from a USB key. I copied down the key from my old pc which I found in the registry files. After I entered the key, it says the key isnt valid. Could it be because it was originally a windows 10 key, and ive been trying to activate windows 11, or is it something else?Any help is appreciated, thanks.
