On a previous version of Windows 10, or a previous release of the Windows 10 Calendar/Mail/People apps, I could synchronize my Google Calendar and Google Contacts with my Windows 10 Calendar, People and Mail apps—even when my Google account was never set up with Gmail service enabled. (I used a non-Gmail email address to create the Google account.)
On my Surface Go, which was set up to do this a couple years ago, this functionality persisted through Windows and app updates. However, any attempt to set up syncing the same way on other Windows 10 computers, after some unknown date, has been unsuccessful. The Google account will properly add, even confirming 2FA before completing with a success notice, but it will not actually sync anything. There are no errors or notices. Google Calendars do not load within the Windows 10 Calendar app, and Google Contacts never load within the Windows 10 People app or Mail app. The line which normally displays the "Last sync" date (under the account details within the People app settings) is blank. Forcing a sync by right-clicking the account does nothing. After deleting the account and re-adding it to my Surface Go (which previously synced properly for a couple years), it now behaves the same way and will not sync anything.
Enabling Gmail service by adding an arbitrary @gmail.com email address to the Google account, and then adding the account to Windows again with the arbitrary @gmail.com address, works properly as expected.
To reproduce this:

Enabling Gmail service by adding an arbitrary @gmail.com email address to the Google account, and then adding the account to Windows again with the arbitrary @gmail.com address, works properly as expected.
To reproduce this:
- Create a Google account using an email address which is not part of the Gmail domain. (*** Email address is removed for privacy ***)
- Create some events on the Google Calendar and some contacts within the Google Contacts.
- Add this Google account to either the Windows 10 People, Calendar, or Mail apps, or within the Windows Settings under "Email & Accounts."
- Disable syncing for "Email," and leave only "Calendar" and "Contact" syncing, since there is no email service for the Google account.
- Attempt to view any calendar events or contacts associated with the new, Gmail-less account within Windows 10 Calendar, People, or Mail apps.
To work around the issue:
- Add an arbitrary @gmail.com email address to the Google account to enable Gmail service.
