Boot error - can only (just) run safe mode

My laptop won't boot. Not sure why. Can only just run safe mode. Event

viewer shows a lot of red X's, some yellow! summary follows:

* About 15 minutes before meltdown plugPlayManager reports? event id 12 -

various things 'disapeared from the system without first being prepared for

removal': (Ricoh MMCH host Controller', SDA STndard Compliiant SD Host

....;OHCI Compiant IEE 1394 Host Controler)

* When? things go bad Service Control manger reports? multiple event id's -

7026 (boot-start or system start drivers failed to load), 7001 (various

failed to start ... A device attached to the system is not functioning.)



Around the time things went bad a DVD was stopped playing poorly (my 16

month daughter, bless her).



I tried restoring to an earlier system restore point. SRSerice reports

event id 110 this was successfull at least once but problem persists.



When the messed up boot screen appears the keyboard appears mostly dead.



I have no idea what is going on, any help much appreciated.

Devices leaving the hardware profile while running isn't a good thing.

Safe mode working is an indication of a corrupted driver or device

table being invalid. I'd recommend an in-place or repair install to correct

the device table. That requires that you have a XP install disk with the

latest Service Pack that is installed on your PC.



In some situations you can modify Device Manager's view so the

device map is shown in a "Parent/'Child" format. I've had cases where

you delete the top level PCI tree device and reboot to have XP rebuild

all the child devices. It's risky and could make the machine unbootable

so I'd go with the inplace/repair install method.

Thanks but I'm now having trouble getting to safe mode and the boot sequence

goes straight to the hard drive. I think at some point in the past I may

have tweeked the boot sequence to ignore the optical drive to speed things up

(doh!!). When I try booting from a boot floopy [still own a usb plug in :)]

I get:

"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:

\system32\hal.dll Please reinstall a copy of the above file'.



Do I need a floppy copy (ouch) or can I set up a smarter boot disk that will

allow me to transfer to my DVD copy of Windows?

Restart, and press the key that gets you into the BIOS. Set the CD as

the first boot device.



On some systems, you can press F12 during boot to boot from a different

device. Read the screen during startup to see what options are available.
