Bluetooth device shows as always connected

Bluetooth headphones - When I connect, use them for a while then turn them off, they appear to be still connected. When I try and disconnect them, it says "Couldn't disconnect". When I want to use them again, I have to forget the device, reinitiate pairing mode and reconnect.
