I installed XP Pro SP2 on a new hard drive and cannot install the 65+ updates
even one at a time. When Windows restarts there is a momentary blue screen
flash [can't read] and then I have to use System Restore via Safe Mode to get
the computer to work. I have had to use Restore more than 20 times in the
last few days while trying to install 20 different high priority updates
separately; more than one update using Automatic Updates things really take a
long time to restore.
I am using a Core Duo Compal notebook with the latest BIOS and everything is
fine but Windows update.

Download and save this - KB936357 [x86 - 32 bit] for XP
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...75283d0&DisplayLang=en&displaylang=en

A microcode reliability update is available that improves the
reliability of systems that use Intel processors
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936357

After going through the Validation dance and when the download is
complete, close the browser and any other open programs.
Now install WindowsXP-KB936357-x86-ENU.exe and restart the system if
requested to.
Next, download and SAVE the latest version of the Windows Update Agent
[x86 or 32 bit]-
http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7/windowsupdate/redist/standalone/WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe
and
KB927891 [x86 or 32 bit]
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...CD-A0B9-497E-8A89-404327772E5A&displaylang=en

When the downloads complete, close the browser and any other open programs
Install WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe first.
Now install WindowsXP-KB927891-v3-x86-ENU.exe and restart the system.

I downloaded the fixes, following the instructions precisely and it helped
some. I can now download a few but certainly not all of the security updates
but no more than one at the time. One thing that has improved is I don't get
the rapid blue screen flash that cannot even be read. Now I get a blue screen
that says Windows has shut down to prevent damage to my computer. It's going
to take a long time to download the security updates at this rate since I
have no way of knowing which one will fail and cause me to have to use system
restore to get back up and running. It's trial and error thus I'm tempted to
not even bother as I won't be able to download them all anyway.
Any ideas?

It's now working. After installing the fixes I ran CCleaner and then
amazingly enough I could update. I was able to run 10 at a time with no
problem.
Thanks

Nice going. How was CCleaner configured to clean up ?
Be wary of removing registry entries as this can become a cause for the
subsequent failures of updates to install.

I've used Ccleaner before and have found that if you stay out of the advanced
options it usually causes no problems and this seems to be the case this time.
I have had problems with registry tools in the past, in particular "Registry
Mechanic" and thus I'm careful with them. My belief is that many of these
"registry cleaner" suppliers do not update their products often enough to
keep up with Windows patches etc and therefore should be used rarely and then
only by those who really know what they are doing.
Thanks for all the help !

The registry in XP does NOT have to be maintained. Especially by 'tools'
that clean it out automatically. If one does not understand just what
one is doing in the registry, then an automated tool is even that much
more dangerous. Windows One Care is one such beast and MS should drop
the registry cleaning component of it.
But do they listen to the MVPs ? <w>

You're mowst welcome, GLM. Glad to have been of assistance.
