Backup and Restore didn't create a new backup after completion

A few days ago I created a backup, and despite the backup taking nearly 8 hours to complete, it successfully backed up to my external drive and is listed in the "Backup and Restore (Windows 7)" software. Today however, I created another backup, and it was relatively fast to get to 97%, but stalled at that point for almost 4 hours before completing. Once it was done I checked my backups, and only the one from a few days ago was there. When I checked in the software itself, through Manage space > View backups, it only shows I have the backup I made a few days ago. How come the backup complete
