Background noise when stopped talking

Hi there, Just wondering if there would be any way to stop this. I work in call centre with laptop and Mic (Jabra Headset). When I go quiet and the customer is talking, after a few seconds they advise that its very noisy and seem to be able to hear people from around me more clearly, its like an adaptive sound issue. Is there any settings or anything that can be changed to stop this from happening? So it hears me or nothing else. Thanks, Martin
