Look in the documentation that came with your system (or find it at

the manufacturer's site online). There should be some way to restore

your machine to factory state.

That may mean that you lose all your data. You could remove the disk,

use an adapter to hook it up to another machine, and copy the data

that you need to keep. Then put it back into the laptop, and go

through the recovery procedure.

Google Knoppix boot disk. Download the .iso image and burn it to CD. Boot

the machine with the Knoppix disk and copy all of your data onto a USB hard

drive. Once your data is safe, restore the machine from the hidden recovery

partition (follow the instruction manual) Once restored, use Acronis True

Image to make an image of your system to the USB hard drive.

In the future, if your hard drive fails, it will take the recovery partition

with it. Since you don't have a recovery disk or an XP install disk, you will

no longer have a way to reinstall your operating system. With the Acronis

image, simply replace the failed hard drive and reinstall your system from

the image to the new hard drive. You'll be back in business in less than an

hour.

And if the hard disk is not already dead, once it is restored to factory

state, he could create his restoration CDs or DVDs.
