Automatic updates being continuously re-offered for install

I have recently had to re-install (update only not clean install) my
Windows XP SP2 PC. I have turned on Automatic updates and got offered
79 critical updates.

I followed the process and let XP install all of the updates. Quite a
few of the updates (about 20) were reported as not install. After
reboot and the completion of the update install for those that
reported as installing OK I again selected the remaining updates.

The process repeated with most but not all of the remaining ones being
installed. I again rebooted and repeated the procedure for the
remainder. However at the end of the last lot Windows Update proposes
all of the updates for installation again.

I went to the MS update site and had it scan and propose what needed
to be updated. This also suggested a very large list (I assume the
same 79 as originally). I let it install/attempt from there but that
has not helped.

I am now getting offered all 79 updates again.

Can anyone suggest how I can fix this. I know I could just tell Live
Update to ignore these but I am not sure if they have actually
installed correctly or not.

Cheers
TonyS.

Hi Tony
I have that problem with one update only and the MS crew is working on a
solution but as yet they haven't found it. In my case it is only 1 update
and a lot of people had this same problem. I don't know if it is the same
problem you are having though. Just figured I'd give you some type of
answer.

Thanks Bill,

Good luck with the "M Screw" <g>.

Let me know if they come up with anything.

I found a reference to a similar problem that referred to using a
Microsoft "Windows Installer CleanUp utility". It suggested
uninstalling .Net Framework (of which I have versions 1, 2, & 3 plus
several updates and patches) then running the utility to remove
references to the .Net framework.

This was useless as it only appears to remove the entries in the
installed software list, which were removed by the uninstall anyway.
However this screwed up my software that used the .NET software which
even reinstalling has not fixed.

So at the moment status is SNAFU.

Cheers
TonyS.

PS. Attackmeister. My situation was reinstall of Windows XP (my
install CD included SP2). I didn't remove SP2 on its own. Does that
make a difference?

Had success with this.

I re-registered the Windows update dll as suggested by the following
post from http://forums.vnunet.com/message.jspa?messageID=870658

Try re-registering the windows update components. This may help fix a
corrupt installer

1. Click on Start and Run,
2. Type "REGSVR32 WUAPI.DLL" (without quotation marks) and press
Enter.
3. Should get the message "DllRegisterServer in WUAPI.DLL succeeded"
Click OK.
4. Repeat above for each of the following:

REGSVR32 WUAUENG1.DLL
REGSVR32 ATL.DLL
REGSVR32 WUPS2.DLL
REGSVR32 WUCLTUI.DLL
REGSVR32 WUPS.DLL
REGSVR32 WUWEB.DLL
REGSVR32 WUAUENG.DLL

5. Reboot

Now try to install your updates.
