Audio output is being picked up as an input

I can see why this might happen; it's not directly connected to the speakers. First, I have a USB to XLR cable, then into a guitar pedal, out using a quarter inch, and then an adaptor to headphone jack size, into the speakers. How would I go about having the laptop recognize the usb as an output device?
