Associations not there.

hello,



I was helping my friend to set up certain things on his XP Home

computer, and he asked why his DVD player wouldnt play a dvd.



Did the usual runaround, checking this and that, then after a while I

decided to check out his file associations. When in Windows Explorer,

I clicked on Tools, Folder Options, File Types. What I found was what

I believe to be his problem, but I dont know how to help him fix it.

Under File types, the first dozen or so entries said that they had

"NONE" regarding associations, and all of those first ones were to do

with his DVD player.



Anyone here help?

Have you tried to reinstall the dvd software ?

Has the unit ever played a DVD?



What software are you using to try to play the DVD and what happens

when you try to play the DVD?



When you put the DVD in, what happens and what do you think should

happen that isn't?



Is the CD/DVD drive capable of playing a DVD? Some older one do not

support it.

All of them? There should be things like "folder", "file folder", "drive",

etc too. Anything that can *contain* files or something like URLs. IOW,

the lack of a file type for a DVD player is normal.

Unfortunately, until I go back there in maybe a few days, (wed I hope) I

cant really answer some of the questions you have both asked.



No, I cant say whether his player has ever played a dvd.

No, I cant say what the name of the software is, but I do know he has

software capable of playing a dvd, just cant recall the name of it.

Yes, his player is capable of playing a dvd, as it is a dvd player; but

as for its age, I cant answer until wednesday. (It is a samsung player,

if that helps.)



I dont think he has much luck with games either, because I remember he

said that when he puts a game into the player, it wants to shoot off to

the internet to update some files or whatever; again, the whole topic

only came up as I was about to go home, so I only had time to quickly

look around at what was or wasnt going on.



I wont tie up posting space, but will read any new feedback as it comes

in, and hopefully post back on wed night with new found information.

Hello John,



I was just about to hit the hay when I noticed your post,, thank you

for your input and all the links, I never realised there was so much

involved to play a dvd. (I personally dont have one, and never needed

to investigate such things.)



I definately am going to hit the hay now, and will get back to you all

wed' night, if I get to be in front of his computer on wed' itself,,

will provide all info I can gather.

Hello Scott,



No, I didnt get to that stage, or to be honest, didnt even consider it.

I was helping him with other problems when the dvd issue came up.



Are we talking about Software that came with the dvd player? or any

Software that can associate with his dvd player.? I say this, because I

dont think he has any Software, but at the same time, I noticed a

short-cut on his desktop that related to a dvd player. Unfortunately,

it was as I was due to leave his house that the whole issue came up, and

I only had about 10 minutes to look around before I had to leave.

It is normal for it to be listed as "None". Select it in the list, then

click the "Advanced" button near the bottom.

Tell us what appears in the "Actions" box there....name all the listed

actions.



Is "Play" one of the listed actions, and is it in Bold letters, meaning

it is the Default Action?



If "Play"is listed, select it and click the "Edit" button, and tell us

what is listed there.
