AppHangB1 error with Steam and Symantec Endpoint Protection

I have had two applications crash with the error AppHangB1 (Steam and Symantec Endpoint Protection) while trying to use them. The issue could be unrelated to Windows, but given that it affects two distinct applications I wanted to ask about it here.


1) I am no longer able to open or install games on Steam. I can open and run steam, but as soon as I click "play" or "install" the application freezes. Sometimes I can't even close it with Task Manager, and I end up having to re-start my computer. I was able successfully run games with Steam 1.5 weeks ago, hence why I know this is a recent issue. I have attempted to:

-restart computer

-reset network

-add dx9 to the shortcut file path name

-run in safe mode (application still worked, but I couldn't install, because no internet)

-run quick scan with windows and symantec antivirus (no viruses)

-update windows

-re-install steam


2) In the process of trying to add Steam to Symantec's approved list of programs, Symantec crashed. I basically had the same issue as with Steam. I can still use Symantec and run the scan, I just can't add anything to the approved list of directories. I have attempted to:

-update Symantec

-use Symantec's troubleshooting tool
