I finished an antivirus analysis last month.
McAfee and AVG are some of the worst in terms of performance and reliability. McAfee is
the only antivirus I've ever encountered that was disabled by malware, on three separate
laptops I was asked to look at.
PC World recently did a comparison and concluded that Avira is hands-down the FASTEST
RELIABLE antivirus out there, with the absolutely least impact on your computer:

(there were faster antivirus, but they either crashed or were not reliable)
However, PC World did not award the top slot to Avira. Not surprisingly, PC World
awarded the top to antivirus manufacturers that advertise on PC World - and tweaked the
test rules to favor them.
Avira also has, by my analysis, the best free antivirus out there:

NOD32 has people on the internet that relentlessly promote the product, but in reviews
it consistently comes up short and is middle-of-the-pack when it comes to performance:
