Almost got scammed last week from someone who said they worked for Microsoft

Just bought a new Microsoft Surface laptop almost 2 weeks ago. Last week, I turned on the laptop and a big blue box popped up along with a few smaller boxes saying that there was a virus on my laptop and that I could not shutdown the computer because it would damage the hard drive, etc. I tried closing these pop ups and they would not close. I even tried to control/alt/delete and nothing. It said to call Microsoft at 1-877-906-6852 for assistance in fixing this problem.
